양천향교 어제와 오늘


조선왕조가 한양으로 천도함과 동시에 유학을 국시로 정하고 유학을 토대로 교육기관을 대확장함에 한양에 성균관과 사학을 두고 각 군 현에 지방 교육기관인 향교를 설립하였다. 본 양천향교도 당시 태종년간(서기1411년경)에 설립되었다.

향교는 공자님을 큰 선생님으로 모시고 여러 성현의 덕을 기리는 제향 공간인내삼문안에 위치한 대성전과 큰 가르침을 펼치는 강학공간인 명륜당, 동재, 서재 그리고 제향과 강학을 지원하는 부속시설인 교직사등으로 구성된다.

 

양천향교는 대성전에 5성위와 송조4현 우리나라18현의 위패를 봉안하고 음력 2월과 8월 상정일에 석전을 봉행하여 문묘 기능을 하며 유학을 연구 강론하는 지방 교육기관으로서의 역할을 하였다. 년중 제일 큰 행사인 석전대제는 지방수령이 석전제를 올리는 것을 전통으로 하여 본 향교는 강서구청장이 초헌관으로 석전제를 올린다.

 

구한말 갑오개혁(1894년)으로 과거제도가 폐지됨으로 인해 교육기관으로서의 기능은 상실되고 문묘기능만 허용되었다. 그 후 1945년 조국광복과 함께 관내 유림들의 적극적인 협력으로 교궁 중수 및 비품 등을 구비하였다.

1963년 1월 1일 행정구역 변경으로 경기도 김포군 양동면 가양리에서 서울특별시로 편입되면서 서울시의 유일한 향교가 되었다. 1965년 12월 4일 서울시 향교재단 인가를 받아 경기도 향교재단으로부터 양천향교의 재산을 인수하였다. 같은 해에 대성전과 외삼문을 보수하였다.

1977년부터 1979년까지 3년동안 향교 복원공사 계획을 수립하고 향교 기본재산 처분 승인과 복원사업 승인을 얻어 1980년 11월에 복원공사에 착공하여 1981년 8월에 1차 보수를 하였다. 1986년 7월에 2차 보수와 1994년 6월 3차 보수를 거쳐 2007년 10월부터 2008년 12월 전면 보수하여 현재에 이르고 있다. 본 양천향교는 1990년 6월 18일자로 서울특별시 문화재 기념물 제8호로 지정되었고, 양천향교에 보관되었던 양천현 홀기가 2009년 3월 5일 서울시 문화재 자료 제44호로 지정되었다.

 

본 양천향교가 위치한 강서구 가양동은 고구려 시대에는 제차파의현으로 불리다가 신라 경덕왕(재위 742~765)때 공암현으로 고치고 1310년 (고려 충선왕 2년)에 양천현으로 현령을 두었으며, 조선조 1895년(고종 32년)에 양천군으로, 1914년 일제지방행정 개편에 따라 김포군에 병합되었다. 1963년 1월 1일 서울시에 편입되어 영등포구 가양동이었다가 1978년 강서구 가양동으로 분리되어 현재에 이른다.

History of Yangcheonhyanggyo site

(Yangcheon is a name of area and Hyanggyo is a confucian temple and a academy belonging to it in the Joseon Dynasty)

Yangcheonhyanggyo is the only current remainning hyanggyo in seoul of those total 234 hyanggyos in Korea. It was founded in the 11th year of King Taejong's rule(1411). In 1981, Yangcheonhyanggyo  underwent overrall restoration and in the year of 2008, Yangcheonhyanggyo was repaired again for the damage of columns in Dongjae and Seojae which were used as domitory. In the Yangcheonhyanggyo, there are total 8 buildings inside(Daesungjeon, Jeonsachung, Nesammun, Myunglyundang, Waesammun, Dongjae, Seojae and reset room).

Yangcheonhyanggyo performs as ritual ceremony twice in a month which is called Bongshim. In February and August, each year, a Confucian worship service(Sukjeondaejae) is held and occationally special ceremony is held as well. Also, Yangcheonhyanggyo has opened classes about traditional courtesy which has been rooted in Confucian shholars to local society especially for young students. Through the class, Yangcheonhyanggyo teaches Chinese character, Calligraphy, about Korean traditional food and the tea ceremony to keep and develop Korean traditional culture.

Designation of Yangcheonhyanggyo as on of the Cultural property of Seoul Monument' has great meaning of historical importance to save our traditional culture. The presence of Yangcheonhyanggyo is a result from love and concerns of Seoul citizens especially people in Gangseo-gu. We deeply hope that Yangcheonhyanggyo keeps doing a role model of cultural heritage to educate young people and children in Korea.
